Margaret Morrison is a renowned American painter, nationally acclaimed for her large-scale, emotionally complex, often haunting figurative works.
In 2018, struggling through a profound emotional and artistic crisis,
she enlisted the aid of a local theater professor, hoping he might somehow help her find a dramatic shape for the dark feelings she’d been grappling with alone.
Meeting Morrison in a black-box theater, the teacher showed up with a group of acting students, carrying boxes filled with masks, costumes and props.
Over the next six years, Morrison would use the photographs taken that day as a basis for the most deeply personal work of her career.
In June 2026, she sat down with one of the students who’d shown up onstage eight years before.
A young actor with troubles of his own that spring afternoon in 2018, neither he nor Morrison could have predicted he’d become her unlikely muse.
But over the next six years, his presence took over her Georgia studio, as his face and form began to inhabit the leading role Morrison’s searching “Paradigm Shift” series.
Sitting together for the first time at Morrison’s kitchen table, neither was prepared for the conversation that followed.
