About Us

Independent Shorts Awards is an international short film festival and live event series based in Los Angeles.

Dedicated exclusively to the short-film form, the festival welcomes projects from all countries and genres, with particular attention to low- and no-budget productions, student filmmakers, emerging talent, and perspectives traditionally underrepresented within the global film industry.

The festival operates through 12 monthly competition rounds, with monthly award winners qualifying for consideration at the Annual Awards and Live Showcase.

Monthly selections and awards are announced online, while physical screenings take place through the Annual Awards Showcase and occasional curated screenings and filmmaker Q&A events.

This structure allows Independent Shorts Awards to recognize outstanding new work throughout the year while building toward a major in-person celebration of international short filmmaking in Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Festival Experience

The most recent Independent Shorts Awards Annual Showcase took place at Regal LA LIVE in downtown Los Angeles and welcomed filmmakers, cast members, industry guests, and attendees from around the world.

The event presented 70 films from 19 countries, including 48 premieres, across three auditoriums and 11 screening blocks.

The program also included red-carpet interviews and photography, a cocktail reception, a Spotlight Q&A, and the Annual Awards Show.

Featured guests included Tate Donovan, Michael Paré, Madison Wolfe, David Alan Graf, and filmmaker Raphaël Buisson, who joined the Spotlight Q&A to discuss their work, storytelling, and the evolving role of independent short films.

In addition to the Annual Awards, Independent Shorts Awards occasionally organizes curated screenings and filmmaker Q&A events in Los Angeles.

Festival History and Venues

Since 2018, Independent Shorts Awards International Film Festival has presented films through annual showcases, special screenings, and filmmaker Q&A events at established Los Angeles venues including 1817 Film Studios in Burbank, Raleigh Studios in Hollywood and Regal LA LIVE downtown Los Angeles.

These events have brought together filmmakers, cast members, industry professionals, and audiences from across the United States and around the world.

Previous Award Recipients and Participating Talent

Projects featuring or created by Academy Award winners Joel Harlow, Laura Dern, Nick Vallelonga, Rayka Zehtabchi, Robert Zemeckis, and Ross Kauffman have received recognition at Independent Shorts Awards.

Previous award recipients and participating talent have also included Academy Award nominees Andrew Chesworth, Diane Ladd, Eric Roberts, Jeremy Renner, Michael Shannon, Paul Giamatti, and Tom Conti, alongside BAFTA, Emmy, SAG, César, Grammy, and Sundance Award-winning artists.

The festival has also welcomed established performers and industry professionals including Tate Donovan, Michael Paré, Madison Wolfe, Charlene Tilton, Debbie Pollack, Arthur Roberts, and Keith Jardine.

Recognition is awarded to the submitted project and credited recipients according to the applicable competition category.

Supporting Students and Emerging Filmmakers

Independent Shorts Awards places particular emphasis on student films, first-time directors, and emerging creative voices.

Dedicated categories recognize student productions and individual student achievements, including directing awards for female and male student filmmakers.

Previous student and emerging filmmaker honorees have included Student Academy Award winner Rishabh Raj Jain, Sundance Special Jury Award winner Masha Ko, and Art Directors Guild Award winner and Crystal Bear nominee Lucy Knox.

How the Monthly Competition Works

All submissions are evaluated according to consistent standards of quality, creativity, technical execution, originality, and overall artistic merit.

Each entry is scored by at least three independently assigned judges drawn from the film industry, academia, and related creative fields.

The highest-rated entries are then evaluated comparatively within their respective categories, and the jury determines the monthly award winners and applicable levels of distinction.

All officially selected projects receive the Independent Shorts Awards official laurel. Custom digital certificates are issued after the winners are announced and reflect each project’s final competition status.

Awards may be presented across genre, performance, directing, writing, technical, production, and student categories at the following levels:

An award is not guaranteed in every category or at every level. Categories and award levels may remain unassigned when no submission reaches the required evaluation threshold.

The number and level of awards vary according to the quality and competitiveness of each monthly round.

Annual Awards and Live Showcase

Monthly award winners qualify for consideration at the Independent Shorts Awards Annual Awards.

Each annual cycle brings together projects recognized across 12 monthly competition rounds. From this pool, the annual Judges’ Committee selects approximately 70–80 films for the Annual Awards program.

The program includes official Best of the Year nominees and may also feature a limited curated non-competitive section.

Unlike the monthly rounds, the Annual Awards follow the traditional format of an in-person film festival.

All Annual Award-nominated films are screened during the Annual Awards Showcase at Regal LA LIVE in Los Angeles and compete for Best of the Year honors across multiple genres, crafts, performances, and production categories.

The live event brings together filmmakers, cast members, industry professionals, and guests for screenings, Q&A sessions, networking activities, red-carpet events, and the Annual Awards Show.

Monthly recognition, annual nomination, and Best of the Year recognition are separate stages of the competition.

Important Information About Screenings

Monthly competition rounds do not include physical screenings.

A monthly Official Selection or award does not automatically guarantee a public screening, annual nomination, or inclusion in the Annual Awards program.

Projects selected as Annual Award nominees are screened during the applicable Annual Awards Showcase.

Projects invited to participate in a special screening, curated program, or filmmaker Q&A event receive a separate invitation with the applicable venue, date, technical, and participation information.

The event date displayed on FilmFreeway refers to the scheduled announcement of the results for the applicable monthly competition round, not to a physical screening date.

Prize Package for Best Short of the Season

Every monthly Best Short of the Season winner receives a professional prize package with an estimated value of more than USD $1,000.

A complimentary professional Digital Cinema Package for a future project of up to 40 minutes, provided by the festival’s Official DCP Partner, FilmVault.

The prize may be redeemed within two years of the award announcement and includes professional DCP creation, secure cinema delivery, and encrypted cloud storage for the DCP and related assets.

The winner also receives a one-year Dehancer Pro subscription, providing access to professional film-emulation, color-grading, and image-enhancement tools used by filmmakers and colorists worldwide.

Short Script Competition

Every project submitted to the Short Script Competition receives a written jury evaluation after the announcement of the award winners.

The evaluation highlights the jury’s overall impression, the work’s principal strengths, and a cinematic reference that may provide creative inspiration.

Eligible scripts may also receive the applicable monthly award levels, Best Short Script, and additional writing distinctions when awarded by the jury.

Project Promotion

Officially selected and award-winning projects may be promoted through the Independent Shorts Awards website and official social-media channels.

Coverage may include a dedicated project page or feature containing the synopsis, film stills, production images, poster, trailer or teaser, credits, and other publicly supplied materials.

The nature and extent of promotional coverage vary according to the project’s final competition status and the materials available.

Submitters are encouraged to keep their FilmFreeway project pages complete and current, including accurate credits, stills, production photographs, a downloadable poster, a trailer or teaser, and an updated synopsis.

Submissions

Independent Shorts Awards accepts films from all countries and across all genres.

Films must have a maximum running time of 60 minutes, including credits. Short scripts must not exceed 60 pages and must be written in English.

Films containing dialogue in a language other than English must include accurate English subtitles.

Projects may have been previously screened, distributed, broadcast, or made available online.
