Holding Onto Heaven Is Giving You Hell

Logline:
Alina, a teenage girl desperate to escape her reality, finds herself trapped in a toxic, yet addicting relationship.

Synopsis:
Alina, a 19-year-old girl with a kind and empathetic nature, consistently finds the good in others. Seeking an escape from her mental health struggles, she becomes vulnerable to Evan, a charming yet mysterious and manipulative 21-year-old man who offers her the world. Unbeknownst to her, Evan inflicts subtle harm over time, trapping Alina in a cycle of abuse intertwined with moments of kindness, which spirals into an unhealthy addiction to his presence.

This psychological thriller delves deep into the exploration of domestic violence, drugs, toxic relationships, entrapment, duality, and the clash between subjectivity and objectivity. Although Evan provides an escape, it comes at a steep price. He introduces her to drugs, leaving Alina to distinguish between fleeting happiness and reality, a challenge compounded by the extreme lows following her temporary highs.

Drug-induced experiences offer her crucial insights, which she initially chooses to ignore but eventually recognizes. The narrative unfolds in the style of a conceptual music video that illustrates the often covert and harmful nature of addiction and abuse until one breaks free of it. The story accentuates the deceptive allure of addiction’s highs. Although it provides an escape, it will inevitably lead to long-term detriment.

Throughout Alina’s journey of self-discovery, she learns to prioritize her well-being and trust her instincts. A tipping point forces her to face her reality, culminating in an overdose. During this terrifying ordeal, she dreams of her younger self, symbolically healing her inner child. Emerging from this experience, Alina starts anew, leaving behind the manipulated version of herself, a visual represented by Evan carrying a body bag. As she finds happiness on a beach, Evan struggles with the end of his control. The film traces Alina’s path to reclaiming her identity and the freedom to shape her future, unshackled from her past.
