Between Prayers

Aisha, a young Afro-Latina woman, navigates the impossible space between two spiritual worlds. Raised Catholic, she’s drawn to the Lucumí tradition and the orisha Oshun, but her family sees only possession and confusion. When she falls in love with Carmen, the weight of living a double life becomes unbearable.
As Aisha deepens her practice at a Brooklyn ceremony space, she experiences a transcendent encounter with Oshun that confirms what she’s always known: she is not lost, she is being found. But when her family discovers her elekes (sacred beads), they stage an intervention at the very space where she feels most whole.
Forced to choose between silence and truth, Aisha speaks: “When I stand at that altar, when I kiss Carmen, I am praying. You just don’t recognize the language anymore.”
Between Prayers is an intimate portrait of spiritual identity, queer love, and the radical act of refusing to split yourself in half. It’s a story about finding home in the between places: between prayers, between worlds, between who your family wants you to be and who you’ve always been.
