Between Threads explores the fading tradition of Kantha embroidery through the women who continue to stitch it across rural West Bengal. Once woven from worn saris and layered with memories, Kantha carries stories of family, labour, resilience, and everyday life in every running stitch. Yet as mass-produced imitations and changing consumer preferences reshape the craft, its cultural meaning risks being reduced to a pattern worn without knowledge of the hands and histories behind it. Through intimate portraits of artisans, the film traces the tensions between preservation and commercialisation, tradition and changing livelihoods. It captures the quiet resilience of women whose work sustains both their families and a heritage increasingly pushed to the margins. Through their stories, Between Threads asks what it means to preserve a living tradition: not by leaving it in the past, but by ensuring that the women who carry its knowledge can continue to shape its future.
