At Shiting Village, beneath Huang Shan’s granite mists, Vivian met Zhu Genzhi—eighty-two, and her beloved, Wang Shouchang.
Granny Zhu taught the city girl to sing Huangmei opera, combing her hair high like a celestial maiden, dressing her in a costume she has sewn stitch by stitch. Between arias, Grandma Zhu told Vivian her own story: after her husband died, she chose to love again. The same courage, Vivian realized, was the courage of the Celestial Maiden in The Tian Xian Pei—the opera Granny Zhu loved most, where a goddess defied heaven for a mortal man.
Vivian has been telling stories since she was twelve, when she shot her first short film. Now, she points her lens at Grandma Zhu: a woman who, at eighty-two, still believes in romance with the same fierce devotion she brings to a dying opera.
