Alongside Best Short of the Season winner Behind the Curtain, the September 2026 Awards of Excellence at Independent Shorts Awards recognize two films exploring lives shaped by violence and the reach of power, through historical drama and psychological thriller.
Child of the Rouge recounts a young girl’s traumatic arrival into the world as the Khmer Rouge enter Phnom Penh, while The Third Dream turns a clinical examination into an interrogation in which even dreams and memories are subject to control. Moving between historical catastrophe and a surreal chamber of coercion, the two films bring intimate human perspectives to questions of vulnerability, survival, and the struggle to preserve a private self.
Child of the Rouge by Taz F. Stark (USA)
Directed by Taz F. Stark and co-written with Pisay Pao, Child of the Rouge recounts a young girl’s traumatic arrival into the world on April 17, 1975, the day the Khmer Rouge entered Phnom Penh. Produced on a budget of $120,000, the 14-minute American short places an intimate human story within a moment of historical catastrophe, bringing birth and upheaval into immediate proximity.

The beginning of one life coincides with the violent transformation of the world surrounding it, creating a dramatic tension rooted in vulnerability, protection, and survival. By approaching this history through the recounting of a child’s birth, the film connects a defining public event with a deeply personal experience, exploring how historical violence becomes inseparable from family memory and the stories people carry about their own beginnings.
François Chau stars alongside Pisay Pao, Jasmine Sim, D.Y. Sao, and Tyler Yath. Cinematographer Jalaludin Trautmann shot the film on 35mm Kodak Double-X 5222 black-and-white stock, giving its exploration of history and remembrance a distinctive visual foundation. The team includes editor Olivia Neergaard-Holm and composers Dhani Harrison, Sean Benitez, and Paul Hicks. Produced by Joe Russell through Stark Motion and Joe Russell Productions, the film counts Brady Corbet and Stacy Martin among its executive producers.
Child of the Rouge had its world premiere at the 2026 Tribeca Festival in New York and subsequently appeared in the Cambodia Town Film Festival’s The Stories We Tell program in Long Beach. The film receives an Award of Excellence for the September 2026 season of Independent Shorts Awards, recognizing its compelling historical premise and its exploration of birth, vulnerability, and survival.

The Third Dream by Mohammadhossein Nikzad (Iran)
Written and directed by Mohammadhossein Nikzad, The Third Dream is a 19-minute Iranian psychological thriller in which a dreamer faces a relentless doctor determined to extract a confession through the coercive use of psychoanalysis. As memories are altered, erased, and rewritten, the encounter becomes a struggle over ownership of the mind itself. Made on a budget of $8,000, the film places its intimate confrontation against the sociopolitical aftermath of Iran’s Women, Life, Freedom movement.

For Nikzad, dreams become the last private territory threatened by authority. The apparent examination gradually reveals the logic of an interrogation, where resistance cannot change an outcome already determined. Shifts in lighting and production design transform the clinical setting into a chamber of coercion, while the camera moves from rigid compositions toward handheld urgency. The circular structure reinforces this erosion of certainty: returning to the beginning offers no release, only a disturbing revision of what appeared familiar.
Born in Tehran in 1997, Nikzad holds a Pharm.D. from Tehran University of Medical Sciences and developed his filmmaking practice through independent study and workshops, including training with filmmaker Shahram Mokri and cinematographer Alireza Barazandeh. His medical background gives the meeting of clinical practice and political control a particular resonance. Salman Salehi plays the Dreamer opposite Alireza Sanifar as the Doctor, with Barazandeh serving as producer and director of photography. Pooyan Sholevar is the editor and executive producer, alongside production designer Faraz Modiri, sound designer Ramin Abousedgh, and composer Nima Ramezan.
The Third Dream approaches repression through the unstable boundaries between treatment and punishment, recollection and invention, dreamer and prisoner. The symbolic framework makes the manipulation of memory inseparable from the exercise of power, asking what remains of individual identity when even the inner world can be appropriated. The film receives an Award of Excellence for the September 2026 season of Independent Shorts Awards, recognizing its layered psychological premise, expressive visual conception, and exploration of authority’s intrusion into private consciousness.
