We, the audience, arrive at work in a bacteriology laboratory and enter into the eyepieces of a microscope to find ourselves in a microscopic world of bacteria and viruses. We are invited into an auditorium where a “SPRED Talk” is about to take place. Hooper, a celebrated whooping cough bacteria, takes the stage and begins a lecture describing what infectious organisms must do to bring back the heyday of infectious diseases. Suspense builds as Hooper prepares to tell the audience of germs what must be done…but leaves the crowd puzzled when they hear that Hooper recommends they do “Nothing!” Hooper explains why he believes humans will soon reject science and education due to an outbreak of misinformation, allowing for a renewed era of infectious disease! The audience of germs applauds with great enthusiasm. The camera then backs out of the microscope and turns towards a laboratory computer screen displaying news about the closure of public health programs across the country. Following this, a simple message appears: “Dedicated to all those who work to improve Public Health.” The credits follow, after which Hooper returns to the screen, coughs into the camera and plods off screen.
