In a film school classroom, Masha and Lёnya are preparing for a practical assignment: to shoot a film in five shots of different framing sizes. While Lёnya tries to structure the process, Masha proposes a surreal scenario with a “pregnant grand piano,” which she immediately reworks into an action movie featuring the teacher Heinrich Apollonovich and Guard Smirnov. Their creative dispute materialises right before our eyes: the characters of their imagination act out scenes that the girl invents on the fly. However, every flight of fancy crashes against the harsh realities of budget, logic, and lack of props.
Lёnya calls Masha out on the meaninglessness of the conflict, and she is forced to give in, offering a banal but easy‑to‑shoot story about two kittens. The heroes leave, leaving their drafts on the table. In the finale, the camera pulls back, and we see that the imagined characters (Heinrich, the Guard, and the Student) are standing around the table. They are disappointed by the students’ choice and decide to go to another screenwriter who is writing about a “talking refrigerator,” hinting that the real magic of cinema happens beyond the approved budgets.
