Twelve-year-old Wang Qiaoqiao confronts an unfair school dress code that allows boys to wear shorts but forces all girls into long trousers.
She wears a pair of grey sports shorts brought back by her mother from a business trip to school, only to be pulled aside and reprimanded by her head teacher, who ignores boys walking around in shorts. Confused and upset, she talks to her mother at night, yet her mom only thinks the shorts are cool and fails to grasp her grievance.
On the sweltering playground, other girls envy her lightweight shorts and want to follow her lead. Later, when Qiaoqiao climbs the football goal frame in shorts, a group of boys gather to snicker at her, drawing the PE teacher’s rebuke. The matter escalates to the principal, who scolds her publicly and issues a total ban on girls wearing shorts, promising to call parents of anyone who breaks the rule.
Refusing to submit, Qiaoqiao comes up with a clever solution: she modifies her standard long school trousers with detachable Velcro leg sections. During art class, she tears off the Velcro strips in front of her classmates, letting the lower trouser legs fall off and turning long pants into shorts in an instant. Her ingenious trick amazes all the girls, serving as her quiet teenage rebellion against the unequal uniform rules.
