A prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition awakens in complete darkness, sentenced to death in a chamber designed for psychological and physical torture. As he explores his cell, he narrowly escapes falling into a bottomless pit, only to find himself strapped beneath a descending pendulum blade. Using desperate ingenuity, he frees himself with the help of rats gnawing through his bonds, but his captors respond with a final, horrifying trap: red-hot iron walls that close in, forcing him toward the pit’s edge. Just as all hope fades, the thunderous arrival of General Lasalle’s French army breaks through, delivering him from the jaws of death.
