Arcuka, Northeast China. For Li Meijiao, the world was confined to grim industrial smokestacks and a drunken father. Her fragile hope was Teacher An—who lied about coming back from “America.” He became her imaginary lighthouse.
Then, one night, she saw it: his clandestine affair with Teacher Su. This unspeakable secret drew her to Meng Ye, another marginalized soul. Together in the frozen darkness, they burned joss paper for the departed, sang songs on heavy machinery—a fleeting, beautiful rebellion. Their secret, momentarily blanketed by snow.
Until the brutal, senseless cataclysm. In the end, she reaches the hilltop: nothing but mist and smokestacks. A sudden, unexplained bang—and the sky rains spirit money like snow.
