A man arrives at the decaying mansion of his childhood friend Roderick Usher, who suffers from a mysterious nervous affliction and believes the house itself controls his mind. After Roderick’s twin sister Madeline is entombed in the family vault, he descends into madness. On a stormy night surrounded by eerie glowing vapors, Roderick confesses they buried her alive. Madeline returns from the tomb and both siblings die in each other’s arms. The narrator flees as the mansion splits apart and sinks into the black lake, disappearing forever.
