“For God’s sake, smile!” is about a young woman (Sophie) who has experienced bullying and, as a result, has difficulty gaining a foothold in the professional world.
Her colleagues and bosses find her strange and feel uncomfortable around her. After losing her office job, she changes her style in the hope of being more accepted by those around her. When that doesn’t work either and she is repeatedly told to “smile,” Sophie explodes.
This last incident affects her so deeply that she considers ending her life.
Instead, she decides to undergo a dramatic surgical procedure in the hope of finally becoming an acceptable member of society.
