Tempest Tossed

Tempest Tossed

In a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s play, “The Tempest” set in a New York restaurant kitchen, chefs Stephano, Trinculo, and dishwasher Caliban run amok and repel the waitstaff, who are horrified by their seventeenth century sexist language and ideas. The night starts off like any other, riddled with boorish behavior and locker room antics until Stephano spies the stunning Miranda through their secret peephole, and announces his intention to have her.

Trinculo and Caliban offer competing plans to capture her either through force, or by drugging her food. Stephano plays one against the other as he weighs his options. But Miranda becomes wise to their despicable plan, and not only escapes her intended abduction, but shows them she has power far greater than their drugs or physical strength. Shakespeare’s fools trample modern social mores, highlighting how little things have changed.
