The Combine is a five-minute videotaped poem enhanced by 3-D animation and music, produced, written, and performed by Los Angeles poet Bill Ratner, directed by Micah Chambers-Goldberg. Ratner’s poem, originally published in the Science Fiction & Fantasy Poetry Association’s Star*Line Magazine, tells the story of an actual incident involving a railroad switchman who encounters a Native American traveler in a rail yard in the middle of the night. The switchman’s supervisor traps the traveler inside a boxcar, resulting in serious injury. The switchman is blamed for the incident.
