The short documentary “The Child Murderess of Vesene”, directed by Carl Eneroth, transports us to unsettling locations of a small country village in Sweden 1929 where Ingeborg drowned her own three children in a washtub at the age of twenty-seven. We revisit the murder scene, the courthouse where Ingeborg was sentenced, and the cemetery where Ingeborg’s children lie. It is a story about a murderess, but also about the humanity Ingeborg’s relatives showed when handling the taboo that followed in a time when mental illness had few cures other than discipline, hard work and praying for forgiveness. After having done the unthinkable, is there a way back for Ingeborg to a normal life? Will her husband, the love of her life, take her back?
The documentary is based on a book “It came to me in a whim” by Maria Bouroncle who, through extensive research, has strived to shed light on what led up to this tragedy involving her great-aunt that had been a tightly guarded family secret for over seventy years.
The film has been screened extensively in Sweden as part of Maria Bouroncle’s book tour. Further screenings in San Fransisco at UCLA and US Berkley has been postponed due to the Covid pandemic.
